Children’s Eye Care
When should you have your child’s eyes examined? According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), the first eye exam should be when your child is an infant at the age of 6 months and then again at 3. The next eye exam should be about the time they are entering first grade at the age of 5 or 6. For school-aged children, the AOA recommends an exam every 2 years. It is important to have your child’s eyes examined because 5 to 10 percent of preschoolers and 25 percent of children at school-age have vision problems. Generally children’s exams will include a case history, vision testing, determination of whether eyeglasses are needed, testing of eye alignment, an eye health evaluation and, if needed, prescription of eyewear.
Eye Injuries
Eye injuries range in severity and scope such as minor irritation that results from household soap in your eye or the catastrophic, resulting in permanent loss of vision. In most cases, if you experience symptoms of pain, visual discomfort or bleeding, you should pay us a visit. If you are unsure if your condition is serious or needs immediate attention, call us and we would be happy to help. Pain that continues and loss of vision after an eye injury can be warning signs that require prompt medical attention. We may be able to take care of you here in the office but if your condition is major, go to a hospital’s emergency department.
